Sylvia Tosun - The interview

by Tavi Meran

Sylvia Tosun

Sylvia, how did you start your music career ?

My family is comprised of musicians, painters and sculptors, so it was expected I would be born with some talent...

When I was three, I listened to my sister take her piano lessons through the door and when she finished [she hated to practice]... I went into the room and started to repeat what I heard her do...

Then after doing that for a while, my Mother noticed... now THAT was the deciding factor... Ha... my sister ended up becoming an animal doctor and my Mother had me focus on the Arts... I was in a bunch of recitals and plays as a child...

Then, became a child composer for Hartt School of Music... Entered a bunch of talent competitions and won them all in order to pay for college...

I auditioned for the NY Grand Opera Company in NYC and got in... Then, ended up getting a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in NYC.Spent some time working with a Rock Opera Band, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and recorded on their albums... Then, worked with my own Singer/Songwriter Band... and played clubs around NYC... travelled a bit. even performed at the Great Wall of China

Now I am totally into Dance Music!!!

Was Deadmau5 your first dance project that you worked ?

Actually, no.
My first Dance record was back in 2005 with a song called
Sleepless... The song is about what it might have been like for Moses having to make a world-changing decision when he parted the Red Sea... It came from my original studio album, Jump In... then, was remixed and went to Billboard Top 10.

Which genre was that single ?

I believe at the time, it was considered deep house... Now, I have for the past few years, been more into Progressive... Actually, I wrote a song called Underlying Feeling and was remixed by Adam K & Soha... Someone got a hold of it and did a mashup with Deadmau5 I Remember... It is a mashup - not an original production... But, the song fits really well to the track and has been getting a lot of attention... Although, I am going to I have never met them.....

Are you thinking to do other collaborations ?

Toronto this week to do a show on BMP as well as a studio session with Adam K & Soha... Yes, I am collaborating with Matt Darey as well as Bellatrax... and working on my FIRST Trance record with Alex Morph...

Do you have any favorite artist or dj that you like to work with ?

If I have to choose someone I have already worked with, that would of course be Loverush UK! However, if you are asking for whom I have not yet worked with, I would have to say I am certainly looking forward to the upcoming collaborations with the people I have mentioned just before....and of course, I would freak out in a good way if I am able to work with Deadmau5 & Kaskade directly!

One of my favorite tunes from you is 5 Reasons, and has a great video. Who wrote that track ? Does it have a story ?

Aha! It is a collaboration between Loverush UK!, Anton Bass, and me!
Loverush UK sent us over the track and Anton and I wrote the top line. I wrote the lyric around an ancient chant for reincarnation... with the hopeful message that both life and love, indeed, return....
I also have a cool collaboration right now on the charts! It is called
Push n Pull... A collaboration between me and Noferini & Marini...

Funny stories happened during that shooting of 5 Reasons video ?

The 5 Reasons video was shot by Photographer from "America's Next Model", Mike Ruiz...
The clothes I am wearing are by Phillipe & David Blond [aka: The Blonds]... They make clothing for Katy Perry, Rihanna, Fergie, Madonna, etc...
We started to shoot at 7am, and finished a little after midnight that same night.
We shot the video at SUN Studios in Manhattan....

What will be your next single ?

Right now, Push n Pull is just starting up the Billboard Charts with being a Power Pick last week, so I think this will linger for a while... I am planning a full length Electronica Album for a Spring release....
So, I am working in the studio a lot right now.

I actually wrote and recorded a song with Ron Reeser & Dan Saenz also that may pop up as a single...

Who wrote that track ?

To answer your question about Push n Pull, I wrote that song with Noferini & Marini and Anton Bass... They sent over the track which was called Twin Peaks originally and did very well on the Progressive Charts... Then I wrote the top line with Anton and it has become Push n Pull...
Still based largely on David Lynch....

When will it be released in Europe ?

Push n Pull is being released November 23rd Worldwide! Digitally....

Do you write your own songs ?

Yes, I always write my own songs...

Sylvia can you tell why it is so hard for a European dance artist to get in on the American music market ? European dance music is considered too childish ? How could someone make it as European artist in U.S. music market ?

The American Market for Dance Music is selective... and the American people are fickle... and very influenced by what is Pop/Urban... But, there is always room for a GREAT SONG....

What do you think about TV shows like Popstars and American idol, which transform unknown people into superstars ?

I think that is nice entertainment for the masses sitting at home in their livingrooms... These shows are good in a way because they give the "underdog" a chance to shine....

What was the funniest story or gift you've got from your fans ?

HAHA... I get random things all the time... I get letters, poems, people want me to read their diaries... I have had artists come to my shows and paint me while I am performing...

Funny? The only thing funny about this is the fact that so many are interested... I am just doing what I do and sometimes, it is certainly funny to me, how grown adults will act like crazy children when it comes to Musicians and Artists...

Do you keep in touch with other house diva Jes ? Would you like to make a featuring with her ?

Oh, Jes!!! I think she is amazing! Certainly a voice to be reckoned with and I would love the opportunity to collaborate with her if the situation presents itself.

I am also loving some of the artists I am signing to my record label...

Sea To Sun/Loverush Digital is my label along with Anton Bass, Mark Loverush and Kinky Roland... We are sending out some amazing talent... Carla Werner, Femke, Molly Bancroft, just to name a few...

Also sending out some amazing DJ's and Remixes: Sted-e & Hybrid Heights / Damien S / Timmothy Allan / Dave Pezza / Tom Noise / Alex Morph.

If I had to characterize yourself in three words, what would they be ?

Creative, Savvy, Passionate.

What does Sylvia Tosun hate the most ?

Cruelty of any kind...and dishes in the sink! :)) .

Do you have any messages for our readers or for your fans ?

Support Music Whenever You Can!!!
Thank you so much for your time
Thank you Tavi!!!
