Tata Vega biography
American vocalist Táta Vega was born Carmen Rosa Vega on October 7, 1951, in Jamaica Queens, Long Island, New York. She has 2 daughters called Angelica and Chloe. Her career spans theater, film, and a variety of musical genres. Her musical styles are R&B, Disco, Soul, Funk and occasionally House music.
She started her professional singing career in 1963. In 1969-70, she was cast in the Los Angeles version of the Broadway musical "Hair". She then became a member of the group Pollution. Berry Gordy spotted the band and immediately offered them a contract. She entered the groupe Earthquire, contributing to a self-titled album released in 1972 under Natural Resources, a Motown sublabel. Album flopped and Earthquire disbanded, only Táta remained. She kept on working for various bands and from time to with some former members of Pollution. She released four solo albums on the Tamla label, another Motown sublabel : Full Speed Ahead (1976), Totally Táta (1977), Try My Love (1978), and Givin' All My Love (1981). Her 1979 single Get It Up for Love was probably her major hit, especially in the discos in the UK.
In 1985 her vocals on Oh, It is Jesus, written by Andrae Crouch got her nominated for Best Soul female Gospel Performance at the 27th annual Grammy Awards. The same year, she performed the voice of Shug Avery in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple movie. She was also featured on four songs on the 1986 soundtrack album, one of which, the very succesful Miss Celie's Blues (Sister), was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Song category.
As a lead backing vocalist, Táta Vega worked with Russ Taff, Stevie Wonder, Andraé Crouch, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles and Madonna, singing duets with Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson, Peter Rivera with Rare Earth and Michael Sembello.
In 1991 she did vocals on Michael O'Neill's album True Love. The same year, she started collaborating with Arthur Baker and Blind Truth. Paino-house single Why Can't We See, featuring Tata and Toney, was the one that caught the most attention. It was massively sampled and used on several eurodance singles by projects such as Systematic, Andromeda, Emotions... and amny other house and electro tracks.
In 1994, she recorded two Spanish versions of the song Circle of Life from Disney's movie The Lion King : El ciclo de la vida for Spain and Ciclo Sin Fin for Latin America.
In 1996 she took part to some songs on Andraé Crouch' album No Time To Lose.
In 1998, she signed with Quincy Jones's Quest Records and released a gospel album, Now I See,which was nominated for a Stellar award. Vega is also known for her song Seasons, a cover of a song by Japanese superstar Ayumi Hamasaki.
2006 : she signed with Do Rite Records, releasing a gospel album entitled This Joy on October 27, 2009.
2010 : Tata joined Elton John's band as a full-time backing vocalist along with Rose Stone, Lisa Stone and Jean Johnson (singer) Witherspoon.
2011 : her first two solo albums, Full Speed Ahead and Totally Táta were reissued on CD by Soulmusic.com records.
2013 : on January 18, alongside Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Judith Hill, she premiered 20 "Feet from Stardom", a documentary about background singers, at Robert Redford's annual Sundance Film Festival.
2014 : in the wake of the documentary's success, her solo albums at Motown were released digitally.
