Shayla biography

Vietnamese singer Shayla Châu Đình's was born Đinh Bảo Châu on March 9th 1975 in Saigon, in a family of musicians (her mother Thanh Tuyền was a mega star in the 60s and 70s in South Vietnam, her aunt Son Tuyền is also in the musical business). She has one sister and 2 brothers.

Her family moved to the US in 1978, they settled down in Washington, then in Houston, Texas. Shayla started studying piano at the age of 7. She was a big fan of the boys band New Kids On The Block. As she was 16, she ended #2 in a musical competition in Houston. She was spotted by local singers who told her mother that she should try a musical carreer. She recorded For Your Eyes Only which received a good feedback from the audience.

After this, she performed for the first time in Australia in front on 2000 people, but, after a tour there, she considered she needed to gain more experience and did a 3 years pause to study to become a teacher.

She appeared on Thúy Nga video show PBN (Paris By Night ) 24. Thúy Nga is considered as the most prestigious recording studio and music production in the overseas Vietnamese music world.

Her talent was rediscovered by composer Trúc Hồ and she started touring in Central Asia. She recordered 13 songs, among them covers of La Bouche Sweet Dreams, Be My Lover, Where Do You Go (a duet with Lê Tâm) which were featured on her first album Dance Music in 1997. Sucess in Vietnam was massive, and she proved during her TV performances that she was not only a great singer, but also a talented dancer.

She also released the great eurodance songs Fly Away, and Let's Party (which don't seem to have been included on any album).

In 1998, Shayla teamed with 2 other artists, Trish and Sy Dan, to release Technowave Remix, a compilation gathering medleys of covers of famous Italo and Euro-Disco 80s classics, under Asia Entertainment. She recorded three solo songs for the Vietnamese marketplace in addition to appearing on nearly 20 compilations and videos.

In 1999 she recorded her thrid studio album Funktify, gathering tracks in English and in Vietnamese. It included some nice dance tracks such as title-track Funktify, Reach Into My Soul, as well as cover of Jam & Spoon's Right In The Night.

Shayla then became a member of all Asian American girl-band ANIME FX.

In 2001, her first American album Only In My Dreams was out under label Global Sounds. It was recorded in Studio Atlantis in Hollywood, produced by Maurice Starr and Mat Young, and Shayla co-wrote and co-produced 3 tracks. It featured duets with famous artists such as Martin Nievera, KaLa'I Miller and her own mother Thanh Tuyền. "Wow. The opportunity to work with such an incredible producer like Mr. Starr is a dream come true," says Shayla. "Growing up as a fan of the biggest boy band since the Beatles, never in a million years would I have ever imagined working with the creator, songwriter and producer of the New Kids."
