Maloy - The interview

Maloy

by Tavi Meran

Hello Maloy,
I want to ask you about your experience on The Golden Stag song contest in Brasov Romania

No, I wasn’t at the Golden Stag Song in Romania. Is this with Captain Jack? Maybe it’s with the other female singer.

Did you enjoy our traditional food ? If so, what did you like ?

I was in Romania but with a live band & we performed for a big Company event & it was organized by this famous singer that was in Eurovision in 2006, I guess. Angel Luz or something. Anyway, I can’t remember what we ate at that time. But it’s more like not the typical Romanian food. We ate bread & meat, I think.

You are said to have done some backing vocals for eurodance project Le Click, which track did you sing on ?

All of the songs on the album. I did the background & dubbing vocals.

Was it with Kayo Shekoni or with Melanie Thornton ? How did you get chosen to become Captain Jack's vocalist ?

It was with Kayo. The CJ producers were looking for a new female singer. And then another producer introduced me to them & I auditioned in their studio in Darmstadt at that time.

Which are the main differences between the Philippines where you were born and Germany where you currently live (if you still live in Büttelborn)

In the Philippines, it’s always sunny. We have rain or heavy storms sometimes but no winter compared to Germany. Plus, we eat rice everyday. I moved to Darmstadt since 2 years.

You only stayed with Captain Jack during 1 year and one album (The Captain's Revenge). Was it the duration of your contract, or did you decide to leave ?

I decided not to do another album due to some business lawsuit & dispute..

What are you best and funniest memories as a member of Captain Jack ?

It’s always a funny experience performing with Franky Gee. Even if we’re not performing, he always makes jokes & pranks with our dancers & other people around. But the best & memorable experience is at “Wetten, dass…” in July 1999 where Ricky Martin & The Backstreet Boys were also there.

Did you keep in touch with Franky Gee afterwards ? How did you know about his sudden and tragic death ?

Not really. But months before he died, we got the chance to see each other at the BILD Zeitung show in Hamburg. He was so delighted to see me & was proud of me that he jammed a blues song with my band. That was our last live duet performance. I learned about it on the news

Tell me a little bit of Shaun Baker project. How did you meet him?

Same thing with Captain Jack. They asked a producer, who I worked with before, if he knew a powerful female singer. So, he gave them my comtact info. Shaun & Sebastian called me for an audition in the studio. They had me singing VIP & they loved it instantly.

Hey hi hello : is it our daily anthem ? :-)

Not really. :D Since it’s not that popular in Germany. In Poland, they don’t say “Hi” anymore. Just “Hey, Hi, Hello”.

Are you still going to work with him ?

Not at the moment because they waited a long time to decide to do a new single. They got busy building up a new business with their own record label & somehow neglected our project. In the meantime, I tried doing something else & my own project. I told them maybe when I’m not so busy & if I get to write some lyrics, too, I’ll reconsider. But probably not this year.

According to your biography you used to suffer from asthma when you were a child. How did you manage to deal with this as a singer ?

I always have to depend on medicines. And when I got to Germany, I was prescribed with asthma sprays & had been dependent on that, too.

Did you contribute to other eurodance projects (such as studio projects which forgot to credit you) during the 90s ?

I can’t think of anything at the moment.

Do you like to go on the web ? What are your favourite websites ?

I’m always on the web since I have to check my e-mails all the time. Like everybody’s favorite: Facebook :D.
