General Base biographyGerman DJ Thomas Kukula founded General Base around 1990. After several years of DJ'ing in Germany he decided to not only play music, but also to make and produce it. General Base released the single Apache (followed by an interactive remix CD). It was inspired from an instrumental written by Jerry Lordan and recorded by British group The Shadowsand. Single Poison in 1993. Thomas managed to get disco diva Claudja Barry to do the vocals on Poison, and the result turned out to be a smash hit dance single all over Europe, Israel (where it peaked # 3) and even parts of the United States. The track contained a sound bite of the President of the United States, George H. W. Bush ("leads us to the greatest of all human aspirations"), from his speech at the "50th Anniversary Observance of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Four Freedoms Speech" in 1991. 1993 was also the year for the release of his first album, First. Later General Base released the singles Back Again and In Trance that very especially popular in the United Kingdom, but didn't quite become as popular as Poison. In 1994 he teamed up with rapper Michael Kassner and several female singers and produced yet another smash hit, this time mostly played in Germany, Base of Love (# 4 in Israel), and this track was later remixed by both Damage Control and Sequential One (ATB). Then came I See You in 1995 (which peaked # 8 in Israel) and the more upbeat 'underground' rave/hardtrance track Rhythm & Drums in 1996 (released as DUG). A great track that is featured on many compilations world-wide. General Base also did remixes for the Maxx's hits Get-A-Way and No More. Now that the sound of General Base seemed to go in one direction, the harder and more underground style, Thomas Kukula decided to found yet another group where he could produce the more mainstream dance music while General Base took care of the 'harder stuff'. That's when he started the project Red 5 who has rapidly gained even more success than General Base and the tracks Da Beat Goes, I Love You... Stop ! and Lift me Up are frequently and rapidly played in clubs all over Europe. Later in 1996 they released a song called Thank U (For Your Love) and in 1997 they released a song called On & On. 2000 : Eskimo released a single entitled Call Me Poison, featuring a sample of the vocals used on Poison. 2003 : Thomas Kukula released as promo vinyl a 2003 remix of Poison, but finally the official release turned out to be a remix of Red 5 called Da beat goes reanimated. Poison 2003 was planned to be be released later... 2004 : they released a remix of their huge eurodance hit Base Of Love. The videoclip used the images of the old 1994. They appeared live on Viva TV show Club Rotation on the 10th of April. All the original team was there : producer, performers, and two sexy dancers. The female vocalist explained that during these years she had been working with several other projects, and also became a mother of 2 children. 2011 : Former General Base frontman MIC will do the rap parts for Experience Of Music next single Electrical Madness.
