In 1991, German producer Alex Christensen had the idea to present Klaus Doldinger's main soundtrack-theme of one of his favourite movies 'Das Boot' (by Wolfgang Peterson) in a techno-version. This extremely dynamic and powerful track with a lot of electronic sounds and underwater effects took German floor entirely while it peaked the charts in many countries: Norway, England, Denmark, Sweden, France, Holland, Belgium and Finland. Interestingly enough, this track made it to US and was released by a virtually unknown American label named 'Cohiba Records'. Das Boot was the first Platin-Maxi Single by this group, it sold at more than 500 000 copies.

In the beginning of 1993 U 96 released their first album called Das Boot. Another song from this album which is worth mentioning was I Wanna Be A Kennedy. In many places it reminded Visage's 1980 hit Fade to Grey. This album was produced by Matiz and AC16 (the team that actually produced all the U 96 albums), featuring Miss Melody (Come 2 Gether and Ambient Underworld), Miss Andromeda (Sportly Animal-Loving Extravert) and a rapper named Satchmo on Ambient Underworld.

In 1993, U 96 released their second album entitled Replugged. It was Alex's response to what MTV-Unplugged series which presented a lot of rock music, while he was introducing a techno-rave style in the dance music. The first hit from this album was Love Sees No Colour. Techno version of War Of The Worlds was a reference to Das Boot. While Das Boot was the only one single to be released in the US, Love Sees No Colour was advertised in the US as : 'The Euro-techno smash finally invades American shores !'. A version of Love Sees No Colour remixed by Bass Bumpers was also released. The album was mostly recorded in France (Paris), written and composed by French artists : Lagonda, Castioni, Wycombe, Ac Beat. As usual it was produced by AC 16 and Matiz. Both producers were already in demand by many stars like Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin or Jean-Michel Jarre. This team of writers brought a French flavor to this album which can be clearly heard in Jean-Michel Jarre-alike track called The One Russian. Alex Christensen meanwhile produced and composed songs for other artists : United sung by the team Prince Ital Joe and the ex- 'New Kid In The Block' Marky Mark.

The album Club Bizarre released in 1995 brought a quite new dimension to U 96's music and left a major impression on the new direction Eurodance was taking. The title song Club Bizarre was a small revolution. It was mixing the blue-sounded harmony with a strong and sharp sound of Vocoder creating a hybrid of melancholy and trance. It included a sample from Alannah Myles' A Song Instead Of A Kiss, and chorus was inspired from Carlton's 1990 single Do You Dream. Almost at the same moment, Italian DJ Saccoman released a single called Inspiration using the same melody.

The cover of this album showed Alex in crucified position. In Club Bizarre album was also featured Das Boot II and Love Religion featuring Daisy Dee's voice. The closing song in this album was the ambient-styled Dark Room Rituals with the leading motiv from classic movie by Steven Spielberg 'The Close Encounter of The Third Kind'. This album had a new set of writers and composers. Besides Alex, the music and the texts were also written by Ingo Hauss, Helmut Hoinkis and Hayo Panarinfo. Another revolution was the release of a CD-ROM version fully interactive.

Both 1995 and 1996 were some year of changes for Alex Christensen. First, U 96 was joined by Dea-Li (Dorothy Lapi) (23) a beautiful, dark haired professional dancer and choreographer from Frankfurt with an admixture of Sicilian blood. The second change was the fact that Alex bought a new house in Mallorca, a small palace with 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, large living room, kitchens, huge dining room, 3 fireplaces, obviously a pool. and 2 fountains. But Alex's love affair with Mallorca was also partially professional. He performs several times a year in the island, the most often in disco temples like BCM or Joy Parade, which are among the biggest dance floors in Europe. Alex was often invited to Mallorca by DJ Sammy, 'The King of Disco Heat', co-owner of Joy Parade who also helped Alex in purchasing his new house. Most of the songs in his new album were composed in here.

In May 24th, 1996 U 96 released their fourth album entitled Heavenin which Dea-Li was featured (she participated in the preparation of 4 tracks). Right from the start the title song Heaven, first single to be released, became a hit. The controversy around this track was an almost obvious 'ripoff' of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time. The major difference beside the text is the speed of the track (154 BPM). Besides Heaven, the album contained several potential hits such as Are You Ready (sort of Trip Hop track but with nice sequence lines and vocals), A Night To Remember (nice male vocal, danceable Euro-Energy sound), Venus in Chains (which repealed to Grace Jones' hit Slave To The Rhythm), or the completely instrumental Drag Queen (acid sound with help of tribal drums).

During the summer Alex came back to Mallorca, where in July he took part to the meeting gathering the leading DJ's from Europe (such as Charlie Lownoise, Mental Theo, DJ Hooligan or Mark 'OH...). From Heaven, many singles were released. In May the title song Heaven was one of the summer hits of 1996. It was followed by A Night To Remember in August and Venus In Chains in October. In May 1997 U-96 released a new single entitled Seven Wonders, where a new vocalist was introduced : Nicky. Seven Wonders brought back the unique U 96 sound, virtual dance techno sound at its best.

2000 : U 96 released an album called Best Of 1991-2001 with 5 new songs and a bonus megamix CD. In the album's sleeve, you can find Alex's a and U96's story. There was also a new version of Das Boot released as a single, entitled Das Boot 2001.

Meanwhile Alex began to work on other projects, among which Rollergirl (started in 1999) and ATC (started in 2000).

2002 : some rumours are going around that there would be soon an full album called like I Love Italo Disco... The new video shows Alex with a nice girl called Yasmin K, who took part to the real-TV broadcast Popstars - his "new" artist-name would be "Alex C.". His new title was an interesting cover (also dance-style) from Corona's eurodance classic hit Rhythm Of The Night... Then came the singles Angel Of Darkness (named after the new Tomb Raider game) and Amigos Forever.

2003 : U 96 comes back again, wtih a new single entitled We Call It Love. It contains a sample of a pop-song, as well as soundparts of the hits Das Boot and Inside Your Dreams.

2005 : Love Sees No Color was covered by the project Shokata

2006 : New single of U96 feature Ben and it's a slow track entitled Vorbei. It peaked to #28 in the German charts. In May Alex worked on the new Paul Anka album. He had just finished the new Allessandro Safina album, and did also the top single Erinner Mich from Ivonne Catterfeld.

The follow-up single featured the rapper Das Bo, and was called Put On The Red Light. It was absolutely not a dance track. The video shooting was on October, 14th in the H1 CreamClub in Hamburg. The new album Out Of Wilhelmsburg is planned for release in 2007.

2007 : Dea Li, after a long pause during which she appeared in a few movies, released an album entitled Hungry as a Hunter.

2010 : Das Boot was remixed by Manolo Fernandez. The result is Das Boot 2010 by Manolo Fernandez vs. U96, released at the end of last March.

2014 : Club Bizarre was covered by Andrew Lias & Crew 7 feat. Paloma

2015 : former U 96 members Ingo Hauss and Hayo Lewerentz created U96 Reboot, without Alex Christensen. They recorded songs Planet Earth, Run With It and Dark Matter

Ultra-Sonic is a project of Rodger Hughes and Mallorca Lee, from Aryshire, Scotland (also known as Brooklyn Boy, Experimental Fluxtuation, Lord Michael). They signed a recording deal in 1991 with Scottish independent dance label Clubscene Records and released their first 12" record called Obsession (which would be re-released in 1994), touring the UK & Ireland. From 1991-1998 Ultra-Sonic released 14 singles (most of them were rather hardcore-oriented, unfortunately for euro fans), 4 studio albums, 1 live album and 2 full length tour videos. Albums sold over 50 000 copies in the UK alone (with pre-sale orders at 30 000) and around 400 000 in combined singles and albums in just under three years. Also the bands video sold 6 500 copies in four days, outselling Disney's The Jungle Book.

The eurodance single Do You Believe In Love featured 2 female vocalists : Chirley Temasen and Hilda Lorenzo. The CDM contained 6 versions. Label: Clubscene Records.

In 2004 they released a single including several of their former hits. Among them, a remix by Scooter of the track Check Your Head.

Break My Stride (1996)

Unique II is a band based in Wienna (Austria). It started with the vocalist Sandy Cooper and the rapper Def-Tone as performers. The producers were Erwin Geppner and Werner Freistätter. The two producers found their way into music from their technical interest, whereby Erwin Geppner stated from bands like Kraftwerk and The Art of Noise, that with a keyboard and a computer a substantially further sound spectrum could be opened. The same was for the guitarist Werner Freistätter, after discovering the electronic sequencers. When they had finished their HTL-education in electrotechnology and electronics they founded Unique II.

Many female vocalists and rappers contributed to the project : Sandy and Def-Tone did not stay very long with Unique II. They appeared on the debut single then left. Then came Jade Davies and B-Nice. B-nice born in Nigeria and moved with his familiy to South London, where he began to work with different bands during ten years. After finishing "business administration" - studies in at the London School of Economics, he moved to Austria 1991. There he rapped for groups like the Bingoboys and Beat 4 Feat. But it was with Unique II where he got the biggest success.

After Jade left (she started a solo carreer), she was replaced by Phoebe Caren, a blond Dutch singer. Phoebe had completed a theater education including singing, dancing, history, akrobatics, cabaret and musical. Parallel to it she had visited the conservatorium for Jazzsinging and popular music, which she completed in 1997 with a diploma. Besides her studies she was also a singer and dancer in several bands.

It all began in 1992 with their singles Iko, Iko, Loveline, Changes and the album Internity. The singles and the album made it to the top 10 in Austria.

In 1996 and 1997 the success continued with the singles Break My Stride (their most succesful single, a cover of Matthew Wilder), Do What You Please, I Still Go On, Dance All Night and the album Level II. These singles also became very popular internationally. They climbed high in charts in Scandinavia, Canada, Italy and many other countries.

In 1997, B-nice left the project to start a solo carrer. Everything became very quiet around Unique II.

In January 2000, they were back with a brand new single called Forever, featuring the brunette singer Sheila Fernandez (born in Manila). The new rapper and dancer was called Christian Troy (born in Chesterfield, England. He had worked before as an model and dancer. In 1999 he was "Black Model Of The Year" in Austria, where he's been living since 1997). It was a new start for Unique II, the single was followed by a new album in February 2000.

Later in the summer/fall of 2000, came the single The Way I Need To Go, including remixes of Eiffel 65. Then, the same year, the single Take Me Higher was released. In June 2001 the single Colours was released.

2002 : a best of CD was released, gathering 10 years of Unique II. The Gold Experience inlcuded new remixes of their biggest hits Loveline and Break My Stride. A tour was also planned, with the current Unique II-members (Sheila and Christian). The same year, a 2002 re-work of the classic Break My Stride was also released.

Everything began on the 18th April 2009 in Kiel, Germany. Swiss Pat and Nick (formerly from eurodance projects Boundless and Groove Empire) decided to visit their long-standing German friend B.P (from B.P.M). They noticed that the chemistry between them was so good that they decided to do a project together. United Passion feat B.P was born. Eddy Steady Go (10th Jan 1994)
Dancin' is Like Makin' Love (11th Apr 1994)
I Feel The Music (17th Mar 1995)

Also known as the Unity Mixers, Luc Rigaux and Patrick Samoy remixed Rozlyne Clarke's hits, such as Eddy Steady Go. The singles were released under ARS Productions Belgium.

They created the eurodance projects Apotheosis and Paradisio (Bailando sold more than 1 million copies) and the acts Rozway, 4 X Sky Juice, Display, The Eliminator, Ex-Plain, Goal, Hyper Space, Isy Brown, Linnsky, Mastermixers Unity, MC Jack & Sister J, Pump Up To Rhythm, Rozway, Up Side.

They were behind the French Dance Computer compilations series, and they also remixed (and sometimes also produced) many artists such as Technotronic, P. Lion, Confetti's, Gibson Brothers, Break Machine, Corona, Latino Party, Santa Esmeralda, Natural Born Deejays, Benny B, Twenty 4 Seven...

In 1999, after many conflicts with their records company Arcade in the Netherlands, they stopped their common activities and seem to have gone separate ways.

Nowadays, Patrick Samoy tours with Paradisio.

Behind Urban Cookie Collective stands Rohan Heath, keyboardist, who writes and produces the songs. The female vocalist was Diane Charlemagne, who also took part to the writing of some of the songs. The other members are Simon Bertall (born on the 17th October 1967) and Peter Samson (bongo player, born on the 15th of May 1968). Also were included, Marty (MC) and DJ Pete (DJ). Some guest rappers also took part to the project : Lovedog on High On A Happy Vibe, 8 Bar Wizard on Spend The Day.

UCC achieved a major breakthrough in 1993 with The Key : The Secret, one of the most riveting dance tracks of the season, peaking #2 in the UK, and #5 in the sales charts in Germany. It was originally a track written at home by Heath, in a soul/hip hop vein, produced by Chapter And The Verse on the tiny Unheard Records imprint. However, after a remix provoked a massive club response it was picked up by Pulse 8, who also issued a double album the same year. A special UK remixes CD was also released for this single.

The follow-up Feels Like Heaven was also very successful, it reached UK charts position #5, and #12 in the German sales charts.

Then came the singles Sail Away, which reached #18 in UK charts and #25 in German sales charts, then High On A Happy Vibe, which only scored #31. The follow-up singles Bring It On Home, So Beautiful, Rest Of My Love, Spend The Day, Ain't It A Shame (featuring the voice of Rachel McFarlane from N-trance) and more recently Champagne Supernova were not very succesful.

The Key The Secret was recently covered by Phobos & Deimos. The Love Parade 2003 theme also used the same sample.

2013 : The Key The Secret was covered by SAIFAM project DJ Space'C.

UCC are touring with their new vocalist Danielle Barnett.

Open Your Mind (1997)

Giacomo Maiolini (sometimes also called Mark Kinchen, Kardivo and Gianni Coletti, no one really knows what his real name is) founded Usura (sometimes written U.S.U.R.A.) in the early 90's, together with producers like Alessandro Gilardi, Walter Cremonini (co-producer of both Jinny and Antares) and Roland Armstrong "Rollo" (producer, co-producer and remixer of many dance/techno projects during the 90's such as Felix, Livin Joy, Pet Shop Boys, Faithless, M-People, Captain Hollywood, BBE and many more).

The name Usura seems to be taken from Maiolini's mother who's name is Ursula. He also dedicaded their first single Open Your Mind to her.

They created a sound that gathered fans and success all over Europe. Their music was inspired by the "underground-techno" that was very popular in Italy at that moment, but they made it a bit more mainstream and often added some kind of guitar riff to separate their songs from others. Their first hit Open Your Mind was released in 1992 (under Deconstruction records) and became a smash hit all over Europe. The video was played on heavy-rotation on MTV. Their follwing singles didn't reach the success of Open Your Mind but they were still very popular among dance music fans, especially in Italy where their songs were played a lot on the radio stations. Sweat was released in 1993 under Deconstruction records and published by Jacomo Music. It gathered the creative talents of Cremonini, Varola, Comis and Spreafichi. Guitar was played by Newfield. Tracklisting varied according to releases : for instance the vinyl released under Time label in Italy included a High Density mix, a Radio mix, a Hazard mix and a Sintagma mix.

The Spaceman was released by Time Records and published by Sym Music. Drive Me Crazy was a very nice eurodance track with vocals of Nicole (who also released some solo singles such as Pump It Up or A Small Entrance To A Large Spectrum).

In 1995 they teamed up with their label mated Datura and the result was astonishing ! The single Infinity grabbed almost as much success as Open Your Mind did. Usura was back for good, we thought, but we were wrong. The project released a couple of more songs, followed by the remake of Open Your Mind in 1997 (remixed by DJ Quicksilver) but they never found their way back to the big scene, and Trance Emotions in 1998 seems to be their last release.

Maiolini has been releasing several songs since the Usura-era, but he has been using different names everytime so it isn't easy to locate him. Rumours say that he has worked a lot with JK and more recently for Whigfield's comeback.

A Deeper Love (16th Mar 2018)
Strike It Up (14th Dec 2018)

Felicia comes from Manchester, England. She was Bass Bumpers' female vocalist. She also contributed to many Bass Bumpers productions.

When the Bass Bumpers team produced an album for Amanda Lear, she did the backing vocals (for instance on a single Fantasy). She appeared on Vamoz - In The Summer '92, another Bass Bumpers production. She is also credited on 5 A.M.'s track Salvation Street (featured on the compilation Cool Struttin' Vol. One in 1993). More recently, her voice could be heard on Gardeweg's single All I Want. Unfortunately this track did not have that much success.

She was also featured by Soul Mates for the single Love Is In The Air. The song was used for a German TV commercial for the Airfresh brand. It was also featured the compilation Superhits der Werbung 2, released in 1995. She also contributed to CJ Stone's The Sun Goes Down. She co-wrote the song Overload by Voodoo and Serano (once again a production of Bass Bumpers music).

She could also have contributed to some other Bass Bumpers productions. For instance in 2003, a single of Mike MH4 entitled You Are My Sunshine was produced by Bass Bumpers Music Production. It was featured on the German compilation Dream Club vol 10 and female vocals realy sounded like Felicia's.

She may also have contributed to the Rhythm Masters mix of Get Ready, a track of Woody van Eyden feat Felicia.

2015 : Felicia was featured by K.K. Project on single Don't Call Me Baby.

2017 : she recorded a new collaboration with K.K. Project, a cover of Snap's Mary Had a Little Boy.

She currently lives in Düsseldorf.
